What
is FAIRTRADE?

|
. |
Fairtrade
is a trading agreement which guarantees that farmers, growers
and small-scale producers have got a fair deal that reflects
their production costs. If a product is part of the Fairtrade
system farmers are offered a guaranteed minimum price for
produce as well as ensuring improved working and environmental
conditions. FAIRTRADE
products are slightly more expensive than other products, but
this makes a big difference to Third World Producers. |

Why
the FAIRTRADE Mark?

|
. |
Millions
of landless labourers and small scale farmers are denied what
should be their right: sufficient income to feed their families,
to send their children to school and that little extra to invest
in sustainable development. For small farmers access to market
information is difficult and, as a result, many small farmers
become dependent on middlemen. In bad times many lose their only
asset, their land and, thus, their livelihoods. Similarly, many
plantation workers endure low pay, an unsafe working environment
and poor living conditions. Too often they lack the freedom to
join a trade union to defend their rights and the opportunity to
participate in decisions that affect their lives on the
plantation. |
|
|
|
. |
The
Fairtrade Mark is the only independent guarantee that a product
has been traded in compliance with internationally agreed fair
trade standards. |

What
does it mean to be a FAIRTRADE town?
